Athletes brave the treacherous weather to take All-Ireland honours

Crossing the bridge over the Annalee River, just outside Ballyhaise, Co Cavan, on Sunday morning was a treacherous affair. A very heavy frost on Saturday night turned cars, grass and trees white. Early arrivals for the uneven ages All-Ireland cross country championships found the carpark resembling a skating rink and the course, unlike the muck in Ballinakill, was white and hard. Thankfully the early morning sun brought a welcome thaw so that by the starting time of the first race at noon, conditions had greatly improved. Most of the Kilkenny athletes who braved the frost and fog for the long drive to Ballyhaise were rewarded with excellent results bringing home eight All-Ireland medals.

Restriction on salmon angling at Pontoon Bridge extended

A bye-law which defers the opening of the salmon angling season at Pontoon Bridge until June 1 has been renewed by the Minister for State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Sean Power TD.

Chairmen call for retention of two fisheries regions in west

The chairmen of the Western and North Western Regional Fisheries Boards have made a joint plea to Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Sean Power to retain the two fisheries regions and their head offices in Galway and Ballina, when the fisheries boards are abolished and a new Inland Fisheries Authority is created later this year. Under Government proposals, the two regions are to be amalgamated.

Start up of Home Energy Saving Scheme questioned by Ring

The Government has been lashed over its handling of the Home Energy Saving Scheme. The broadside has come for the Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring, who said details of the scheme should not have been announced until it was ready to be implemented. The green light for the scheme was given at the beginning of February but householders cannot apply until later this month.
